COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Turkish Navy’s ADA-class corvette, TCG BÜYÜKADA (F-512), arrived at the Port of Colombo on a goodwill visit, marking a significant moment in maritime diplomacy between Türkiye and Sri Lanka.
The vessel was ceremonially welcomed by the Sri Lanka Navy, alongside officials from the Embassy of Türkiye in Colombo.
Commissioned into the Turkish Fleet in September 2013, TCG BÜYÜKADA is a product of the MILGEM (National Ship) project, which represents Türkiye’s indigenous warship design and shipbuilding capabilities.
The corvette is designed for multi-warfare operations, including anti-surface, anti-submarine, and asymmetric warfare, and is equipped with the advanced GENESIS-MILGEM Combat Management System.
With a displacement of approximately 2,500 tons and a length of nearly 100 meters, the vessel is powered by a Combined Diesel and Gas (CODAG) propulsion system, capable of exceeding speeds of 29 knots.
It carries a range of sophisticated weaponry and sensors, including HARPOON surface-to-surface missiles, a 76mm naval gun, torpedo launchers, and advanced radar and electronic warfare systems. The ship also features a hangar and flight deck capable of supporting an S-70B Seahawk helicopter.
TCG BÜYÜKADA is fully NATO interoperable and has participated in numerous multinational exercises and overseas deployments, reinforcing its role in promoting maritime security and international cooperation.
During its stay in Colombo, the crew is expected to engage in professional exchanges and cultural interactions with their Sri Lankan counterparts, further strengthening naval ties and mutual understanding between the two countries.
