COLOMBO (News 1st); Following a sweeping victory in Sri Lanka’s 2025 local government elections, the National People's Power (NPP) has expressed confidence in its ability to lead and transform local governance across the country.

Speaking after the results began to roll in, NPP General Secretary Nihal Abeysinghe highlighted the significance of the moment, noting that this was the first local government election held in nearly seven years. “The people have placed their trust in the NPP once again,” he said, referencing the party’s growing momentum since its parliamentary breakthrough and the presidential election victory of Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Abeysinghe confirmed that the NPP had secured a large number of local authorities and was preparing to establish councils in areas where it had won clear majorities. In regions where no single party holds a majority, he said the NPP would explore collaborative approaches with smaller parties and independent groups to form stable administrations.

“We will continue the work we began in Parliament and now extend it to the grassroots,” he said. “These councils will be instrumental in building strong relationships with the public and driving development in the months ahead.”

He also extended his gratitude to NPP members, supporters, and the public for their overwhelming support. “Together, we can build a better future for this country,” he added.
