COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Court of Appeal on Wednesday (5) issued summons on State Minister Sanath Nishantha, requesting him to submit reasons for him to not to be punished with regard to contempt of court allegations, on 13th October 2022.

The Appellate Court issued summons after considering a petition submitted by the Sri Lanka Judicial Service Officers Association.

Nishantha was issued a summons by the Appellate Court bench consisting of Justices Nishanka Bandula Karunaratne and R. Gurusinghe.

Romesh De Silva PC, who appeared for the petitioners, stated before the court that the magistrate's bail granting process was challenged by a statement made by the State Minister Nishantha on August 23rd.

The President's Counsel stated that the State Minister had emphasized that the rule of law would be in jeopardy due to the process of granting bail, and emphasized that this can be considered as a serious insult to the judiciary.

Satisfied with the facts presented, the bench ordered the respondent Nishantha to appear before the court on 13th October and issued summons as well.

In relevance to the same accusation, two petitions filed by two other lawyers are also scheduled to be called on October 13th.

The Court of Appeal has already issued summons to Nishantha to appear before the court on the date with regard to the above two petitions.
