Walsapugala farmers' protests continue for 38th day

COLOMBO (News 1st); Farmers in Walsapugala are engaged in a satyagraha for the 38th consecutive day, demanding for a proper solution for issue of wild elephants damaging their crops. 

These farmers are requesting that the gazetted Hambantota Wild Elephant Management Reserve be properly implemented and for wild elephants that are currently roaming the villages be chased away to the reserve.

Meanwhile, farmers have become helpless as they are unable to protect their hard-cultivated lands from wild elephants.

Aralaganwila, Kajuwatta village in Polonnaruwa is a village that is constantly threatened by wild elephants, and in addition, the farmers in the village, who cultivate only with rain water have not received neither rain water nor fertilizer during this season.

The wild elephant that invaded the village last night had damaged about 10 acres of paddy fields.
