COLOMBO (News 1st); The Ministry of Public Services, Provincial Councils and Local Government has commenced a study on the protests by SLAS trade unions against the decision taken to increase the retirement age of public servants to 65 years.

Its Secretary, J.J. Ratnasiri stated that a report in this regard will be submitted to the Cabinet by the Minister in charge of the subject.

Many unions point out that the retirement age should be decreased to 62 years.

The Secretary to the Ministry mentioned that several discussions were held between him and the trade union representatives in this regard.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance has already taken the initial steps to extend the retirement age of employees in state enterprises to 62.
