India’s Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Bipin Rawat and 13 others were killed today (8), as their Mi-17V5 Advanced Helicopter crashed in Tamil Nadu.

Experts remain stunned, unable to explain how one of the safest and most technologically advanced helicopters in the world, could simply fall from the sky.

There had been no reports of any problems during the flight so far, either according to initial Indian media reports.

The Mi17V5 helicopter is manufactured by Russian Helicopters’ subsidiary Kazan and has an onboard weather radar and is equipped with the latest generation of night vision technology as well.

The Russian chopper crash that killed India’s top military leader comes not 48-hours after Russian President Putins flying visit to New Delhi, where he discussed the Russian S-400 Air Defense System with Indian Prime Minister Modi; a deal that has prompted threats of US Sanctions.
