COLOMBO (News 1st); The village of 'Yaaya Haya', in rural Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, was battered by the ravages of a civil war for decades, as it's people bravely clung on to a precarious life, in this border village. Over a decade later, the ravages of poverty has left the people of this village facing a new battle altogether: one against poverty, a lack of basic facilities and a desperate search for clean drinking water. This is why #Gammadda chose 'Yaaya Haya'. A ready partner, 'The Club HNB' stepped up. By bringing in their key customers, the day 'change' came to ' Yaaya Haya ' wasn't a dream anymore. Together, #Gammadda and The Club HNB installed a full-fledged Water Purification Plant built by the Sri Lanka Navy today making it possible to purify 10,000L of water daily, serving nearly 1,000 families. Not stopping there, the students at the village school, The Saliyamali Maha Vidyalaya, were also given a reason to smile; they will get brand new sanitization facilities plus an upgrade to their IT lab. The work on both these projects commenced today. "We want this to be a model village. We want to lift their lives. We can and will achieve this", noted Chevaan Daniel, the Head of #Gammadda. Michelle de Silva, a Snr. Manager at HNB, mentioned in her speech at a ceremony this morning, that changing a village can change a nation. Today's event at Yaaya Haya marked the beginning of work in this village. The beginning of that change. The coming months will see several other projects being completed, ultimately impacting the people, who had little to hope for. #Gammadda is today Sri Lanka's largest grassroots development movement, covering all 14,000+ administrative units in the country. #Gammadda. By the People. For the People.
