COLOMBO (News 1st); The Colombo Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar on Tuesday (2) rejected the request made by the Attorney General to drop the charges filed against Former Navy Commander & Admiral Of The Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda.

Senior State Counsel Lohan Abeywickrama requested permission from the court to not proceed with the indictments filed against Karannagoda, as the Attorney General has decided not to proceed with the indictments and not to lead evidence.

However, the court emphasized that if the charges against an accused in a case filed with the Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar, after indictments are filed, are to be dropped, the Attorney General must personally appear in court and make the request or make a written request bearing the signature of the Attorney General.

The Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar said it cannot grant permission for verbal requests, and thereby rejected the request.

Admiral of the Fleet Wasanna Karannagoda is the 14th suspect in the case filed by the Attorney General on charges including abduction and enforced disappearance of 11 youth from Colombo.

The Senior State Counsel further informed the court that the Attorney General had decided to amend the charge sheet and proceed with the case against the 13 other suspects.

The case will be called up again on the 3rd of December, ruled Justices Champa Janaki Rajaratne, Amal Ranaraja, and Nawaratne Marasinge.
