COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka's Supreme Court on Friday (22) ordered a Police Sergeant and Constable to pay Rs. 500,000/- each as compensation to a victim of an inhumane assault back in 2017.
A Fundamental Rights Application was filed with the Supreme Court noting that in 2017 officers attached to the Anuradhapura Crimes Investigation Bureau had unlawfully arrested the victim, a youth at the time, and had hanged & beaten him in an inhumane manner.
The cops identified as Sirisenage Priyadarshana and Nilantha Priyadarshana were also ordered to pay Rs. 25,000/- each as a legal fee.
Both compensation and legal feed should be paid from the personal funds of the police officers, ordered the Supreme Court.
