COLOMBO (News 1st) - A seven-day detention order was obtained against two suspects for allegedly opening fire at a group of police officers in Kosgoda area.
The shooting occured when police officers were conducting a raid in the area.
Police revealed that the suspects were preparing to assassinate four close associates of the organized criminals 'Karandeniya Sudda' and 'Kosgoda Suji'.
The assassination had allegedly been planned under the direction of organized crime figures known as 'Ahungalla Loku Patty' and 'Ahungalla Sanjeewa'.
The raid was conducted by the Walana Anti-Corruption Unit following a tip off that the suspects were staying at a residence in the Kosgoda area.
The suspects allegedly opened fire at the police during the raid.
Police Spokesperson ASP F. U. Wootler said one suspect was injured in return fire by the police and admitted to Balapitiya Hospital.
The injured suspect and another suspect were subsequently arrested.
Police recovered a 9mm pistol with eight rounds of ammunition, a magazine, a Micro-type revolver, and a magazine containing six rounds from the suspects.
Six live 9mm rounds and a foreign-made live hand grenade were also recovered at the house where the suspects were staying.
The Walana Anti-Corruption Unit also took into custody a motorcycle and a three-wheeler with fake number plates.
The vehicles had been prepared to carry out a crime.
Police said the organized crime had allegedly been arranged for a contract worth Rs. 1 million.
