'Weerasekera should be responsible if Sri Lanka loses GSP+," - Teachers Unions

COLOMBO (News 1st); Teacher's Unions allege that the Government attempting to use military response following a statement by Public Security Minister Sarath Weerasekara, who said that he will not follow a soft policy regarding teachers who go on strike. The Secretary of the Ceylon Teacher's Union, Joseph Starlin challenged the Government to present the 'tough actions' in the presence of the European Union delegation currently visiting the country to assess the granting of the GSP+ facility. " He now stated that this Government is acting in a soft manner and therefore tough decisions should be taken. We like to ask what those tough action decisions are. He is doing this when a group of delegates representing the European Parliament are in this country are present. We ask him to propose what he suggested to the Cabinet s well" He said. The Chairman of the Association of Education Professionals, Ven. Ulapane Sumangala Thero says that unions will not bow to any of Minister Weerasekara's ploys. " This is a proposal to militarize the country, and it was not said by accident. Does this country not have enough laws already? Why can't they impose these strict laws to take action against the garlic scam and the sugar scam? We have made it clear that we will never submit to Sarath Weerasekara's ploys."" He mentioned. Meanwhile, Former Provincial Councilor and JVP member Nalin Hewage asks why the Minister cannot take any tough decisions regarding incidents of Ministers threatening prisoners. " Especially after this statement, we would like to emphasize the fact that Minister Sarath Weerasekara should take the responsibility if there is any attack on the silent protests in this country in the future. We know he's making this big threat. he can definitely take tough decisions, especially when the ministers visit prisons and threaten prisoners" He said. Ven. Pahiyangala Ananda Sagara Thero, the Chairman of the Surakimu Sri Lanka Organization has asked the Minister to resign from the position if he does not understand the consequences of his statements. " What are these statements being made by the Minister when the president is not even back from United Nations yet? He is not controlling a group of thugs, he is in charge of the Police.
