COLOMBO (News 1st); Ruling Party members of the Colombo Municipal Council staged a sit-in protest on the CMC lawn on Monday (27) afternoon.
The protest was staged demanding allocations be made for a relief package to be given to the residents of Colombo.
The CMC members alleged that the CMC officials are not making the necessary allocation.
Colombo Mayoress Rosy Senanayake met with the protesting members and urged them to call off their protest.
"When the lockdown was imposed on 21st August, we moved a motion for a dry ration package for the residents on the 23rd of August," she told reporters adding that the CMCs Finance Committee met on several occasions to adopt this decision.
She alleged the officers in the CMC were conducting themselves in a manner to refuse to release the funds citing non-acceptable reasons.
At the same time, personnel attached to the Finance Division of the Colombo Municipal Council also staged a walk-out on Monday (27).
CMC Member Mahinda Kahandagama representing the CMC Trade Unions' alleged malpractice had taken place when the dry rations were distributed on previous occasions and a request was made to ensure it does not happen this time.
He alleged the officer in charge of the CMC treasury was intimidated as well.
