COLOMBO (News 1st); Dr. Mahim Mendis from the Federation of University Teachers Associations fears that he might be arrested by Sri Lankan authorities on Wednesday (11).
Speaking at a forum in Colombo, Dr. Mahim Mendis said ‘We are living in a very decisive period where suppression is on the rise.
‘Suppression rise when we lose faith in democracy and people-centric opinions,’ he said adding that there is no provision for democracy in a country that cannot stand the sight of democracy.
The time is now to rally the masses for democracy casting aside all differences, he said.
Dr. Mahim Mendis urged all to come to a common understanding to denounce militarization, harassment, bullying, and injustice.
He alleged there is an attempt to instill a fear psychosis among the teaching fraternity in the country adding, ‘We cannot be certain as to who will be dragged away next.’
