Colombo (News 1st); Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardena's vote theory should be applied to the result of the 2019 Presidential Election as well.
On Tuesday (23) following the vote on the resolution on Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council, the Foreign Minister said the UN Core Group failed to secure a majority vote. "Out of the 47 countries of the Human Rights Commission they could harness only 22 and 25 votes were not on their side of the resolution," Gunawardena told the media on that day. On Thursday (25) responding to the Opposition Leader in Parliament, the Foreign Minister said the election for the President takes place according to law. Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said Sri Lanka's foreign policy is weak, adding countries that stood by Sri Lanka either voted against or abstained from voting. "The Sri Lankan representative in Geneva has pleaded for a government minister to remain tight-lipped to secure votes at the UNHRC," said Premadasa.
