Train Strike in effect - Evening train operations to be delayed

Colombo (News 1st); Locomotive Engineers, train guards & affiliated trade unions have launched a strike action with immediate effect on Wednesday (17).

Indika Dodangoda, the Secretary of the Locomotive Engine Operators’ Union (LEOU) speaking to News 1st said the strike is against unjust disciplinary action on railway workers. He said disciplinary action was taken continuously against railway workers and when discussions took place, the authorities have noted that a decision was made to recover losses caused in operations from Locomotive Engine Operators. He alleged the Department of Railways is attempting to recover losses in the millions from them under the guise of an audit act. The Railways Control Room said the strike action would result in a delay in operations from today. Trains scheduled for the afternoon did not operate as well, said the Railways Control Room.
