Colombo (News 1st); Basil Rajapaksa said discussions will be held with the Elections Commission with regard to conducting the Provincial Council Elections as soon as possible.

Speaking to a group of former Provincial Council members, Rajapaksa said following discussions with the Elections Commission necessary provisions will be implemented for the Provincial Council Elections to be held according to the previous electoral system.

The meeting was held following a request made by the SLPP Provincial Councils Members' Forum urging the founder of the SLPP to intervene for the Provincial Council Elections to be held.

Basil Rajapaksa had pointed out the general public has been severely inconvenienced as Provincial Councils have been operating in the absence of members for more than 02 years, adding the Yahapalana Government had proposed the Provincial Council Act with the intention of postponing the elections.

Basil Rajapaksa had stressed the present government will solve the legal impediments and take measures to hold the Provincial Council Elections, even in accordance with the previous electoral system.

Minister of Public Services, Provincial Councils & Local Government Janaka Bandara Tennakoon speaking at the meeting had noted the Ministry is preparing the necessary legal provisions for the elections to be held.
