Parliamentary Council to meet for the first time

COLOMBO (News1st): Sri Lanka's parliamentary council established by the 20th amendment will convene for the first time on Wednesday. The appointment of Supreme Court judges is to be discussed at the meeting that will begin at 4 pm, the parliament's communication department said. The meeting will take place at parliament speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena's official residence. The parliamentary council, chaired by the speaker, will comprise the Prime Minister, Opposition Leader, and of their representatives. Minister Douglas Devananda has been appointed as the Prime Minister's representative and parliamentarian Kabir Hashim as the opposition leader's representative. The parliamentary council, established under the 20th amendment, replaces the constitutional council brought out under the 19th amendment.
