Colombo (News 1st); Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said the 20th Amendment to the Constitution was prepared to pave the way for the creation of a new constitution that would build the nation.

' We have no intention of reaching deals to secure votes for the passage of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution,' said the Prime Minister.

He said when the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was presented even the members of the Maha Sangha were not given an opportunity to comment.

If not for the Executive Presidency, all measures taken to bring an end to the war would have had to be called off as a result of those who crossed over, he said.

"With the introduction of the 20th Amendment and the abolition of the 19th Amendment, everyone thinks that this Audit Commission has created a country where there will never be any fraud," said the Prime Minister.

It was said the Audit Commission had the power to audit the Presidential Palace and even Temple Trees, however, it is questionable if that actually happened, he said.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa urged the opposition to consider the facts presented to them and support the amendments.
