'Makandure Madush' killed in Maligawatte shootout

Colombo (News 1sr); Notorious underworld leader Samarasinghe Arachchige Madush Lakshitha also known as 'Makandure Madush' was killed in a police shootout early on Tuesday (20) morning during a raid at the Apple Watte Housing Scheme, in Maligawatte.

Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana said 'Makandure Madush' was escorted by the Colombo Crimes Division for a drug raid in Maligawatte.

During the raid a shootout had taken place resulting in the death of 'Makandure Madush' and injuring 02 CCD officers.

Further, 22 kilograms of heroin was discovered during the raid.

Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana said 'Makandure Madush' is responsible for the 2006 murder of former Southern Provincial Councilor Danny Hiththatiya as well as multiple other crimes including homicides.

'Makandure Madush' was arrested on the 05th of February 2019 by the Dubai Police at a Party.

Thereafter, he was extradited from the UAE on the 05th of May 2019.

'Makandure Madush' was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department upon arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport.

'Makandure Madush' was detained by the CID on detention orders for multiple investigations.

DIG Ajith Rohana said on the 16th of October 2020 he was handed over to the Colombo Crimes Division for further investigations.

Interrogation of 'Makandure Madush' and another suspect led to the discovery of 10 kg of heroin hidden in Kotikawatte, Colombo.

'Makandure Madush' had led his criminal operations from Dubai, said the Deputy Police Chief.
