Wijeyadasa says 20th amendment can damage constitution

COLOMBO (News1st): Parliamentarian Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe has criticized the 20th amendment, citing it as a move that could damage the country's constitution. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Rajapakshe said president Gotabaya Rajapaksa could not have been elected to office if not for the 19th amendment. "If not for the 19th amendment he wouldn't have even become a candidate for the presidential election, let alone the president of the country," the parliamentarian noted. He explained that it was the 19th amendment that imposed a limit on the number of terms a president can hold office, allowing Rajapaksa to contest the poll. Meanwhile, the ruling party parliamentarian pointed out that the 20th amendment would curb the powers of the Prime Minister. He said that he would decide on whether he would support the amendment after the supreme court issues its ruling.
