AG advised NEC on "Our Power of People Party" National List nomination

Colombo (News 1st);  Attorney General Dappula De Livera has advised the Chairman of the National Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya in terms of the legal advice sought with regard to the "Our Power of People Party" nomination to the National List.

Coordinating Officer to the Attorney General, State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne speaking to News 1st said NEC Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya called on the Attorney General on Friday (14) morning.

She said during the discussions it was revealed that two people, Venerable Vimalathissa Thero and another, representing themselves as the General Secretary of the OPPP had handed over two separate nominations to the National List, on the same day, which is the 07th of August 2020.

The National Election Commission had noted it observed there is an issue with regard to the post of General Secretary of the OPPP between two opposing factions and therefore sought legal advice from the Attorney General on which nomination should be accepted by the NEC.

The Attorney General had noted there is no issue with regard to the legal provisions of the matter and advised the NEC should accept the nomination presented by the person the NEC accepts as the General Secretary of the "Our Power of People Party".
