Dutch Foreign Minister meets with President Sirisena

COLOMBO (News 1st):- Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs Stef Blok who is currently in the island, met with President Maithripala Sirisena today (October 20). The meeting took place at the President's official residence. It was reported, during the meeting that both parties had discussed matters regarding bilateral and zonal activities. President's media division said the president stressed that he will remain neutral in the upcoming presidential election, which he believes will take place democratically, without any corruption. It adds, since the police and tri-forces currently fall under his supervision, President Maithripala Sirisena had instructed them to ensure the upcoming presidential election will be be held in an unbiased and independent manner, protecting law, order, and peace in the country. The statement issued by the President's media division further adds President Maithripala Sirisena had appreciated the support extended by the government of the Netherlands. The foreign minister of the Netherlands had stated, it is important to strengthen international support to counter-terrorism. The Dutch foreign minister visited one of the hotels in the April 21st attacks, to pay tribute to the victims. Following his visit, the minister tweeted "Hundreds of victims were killed in the attacks that day, including three Dutchmen. Sri Lanka is working hard on recovery."
