Pujith Jayasundara arrested and bailed for threatening elevator operator

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara who is on compulsory leave was arrested by the CID this morning and released on bail by the Fort Magistrate's Court this afternoon. Police media spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekera said Pujith Jayasundara was arrested for threatening an elevator operator at Police headquarters in 2017. The Fort Magistrate highlighted interfering with the duties of any public officer is a serious offence and questioned how could action be taken against other senior officers interfering with the work of junior officers when a super senior officer such as Pujith Jayasundara makes threats to a junior officer. The CID stated that they showed IGP Jayasundara, the CCTV footage from the day of the incident as a statement was recorded from him. The CID added that IGP Jayasundara acknowledged the authenticity of the content in the CCTV footage and regretted the incident. The Colombo Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake ordered Pujith Jayasundara to be released on a surety bail of Rs 200,000 and ordered for the matter to be taken up again on January 8th.
