42nd UNHRC session commences in Geneva

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The 42nd Regular Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council began today (September 09) and will last till September 27th in Geneva, Switzerland. The session was opened by Coly Seck, President of the Human Rights Council and presided over by Michelle Bachelet, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The annual report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and reports of the Office of the High Commissioner and the Secretary-General were presented. The first day saw the discussions of the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar, the implementation of the recommendations contained in the report of an independent international commission of inquiry on the protests in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and the situation of human rights in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ruwanthi Delpitiya speaking to News 1st said representatives from Sri Lanka's Permanent Mission to the United Nations will attend today's session.
