COLOMBO (News 1st) – For the first time, the Kurunegala teaching hospital successfully carried out an organ transplant. The procedure involved the transplanting of two kidneys of a brain dead 9-year-old child to a 35-year-old. The speciality of the operation was that the organ removal and the transplant took place at the same operation theatre.
Dr Sarath Weerabandara, Director of Kurunegala Teaching Hospital noted that the organ and blood vessels specialist at the Kurunegala Medical Staff led the surgery and entire staff of the hospital aided the operation. He added that the entire operation lasted almost 7 hour which was the longest surgery in the history of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital.
