COLOMBO (News 1st): Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe speaking on the death penalty said that the implementation of this decision is completely against the policies of their party. He continued to say that they had spoken to the opposition leader, the JVP, the Tamil parties and stated that all of them are against this. The Prime Minister further said that back in 2016 the government had decided to vote in favour of the proposal not to implement the death penalty at the UN and said that they also voted in favour of the same thing in 2018 when he was not the Prime Minister since he was removed from power. Wickremesinghe added that he will be discussing the matter with his ministers and then the President this weekend. He spoke on the matter while attending an opening of a three-storied building at the Primary school in Oddegoda. The Prime Minister later inspected the renovation activities of the Kosgas Arawa reservoir and also attended an event to distribute Samurdhi beneficiary schemes at the Maariarawa weekly fair.
