COLOMBO (News 1st): While intense efforts are being taken to sell the country's national resources to other countries, this is a report on national resources being destroyed due to the negligence of the officials. Kantale Sugar Factory is a gift from Czechoslovakia. It commenced production in 1960. The factory's lands which spread over 21,000 acres were privatized in 1993 and it was again nationalized in 1997. 5000 workers are currently employed in the factory. The road to the factory is in a dilapidated state where trailers and tractors which were used to transport sugar cane are left to corrode. Against such a backdrop, when it is forecasted that by the year 2020 that sugar consumption will be a million metric tons, is it fair to leave out this factory to decay and to be sold for scrap iron? Kankasanthurai Cement factory which commenced its production in 1950 was closed down in 1990 because of the war. Although it has been 10 years since the end of the 30-year war, officials have failed to put the cement factory back in action. Back then it was the largest cement manufacturing factory in Sri Lanka and its speciality is that limestone which is needed to manufacture cement was extracted from its own land.
