104 Mahara Prison Inmates Transferred Following Unrest

COLOMBO (News 1st) - 104 inmates from the Mahara Prison have been transferred to other prisons.

This follows the unrest that broke out among a group of inmates yesterday.

Prisons Department Spokesperson A.C. Gajanayake said that these inmates have been transferred to the Dumbara, Welikada, Boossa, Kalutara, Badulla, Polonnaruwa, and Batticaloa prisons.

The list containing the names of those inmates has been displayed near the roadblock at the Mahara Prison. 

Meanwhile, the Prison Department has decided to suspend visits to inmates at the Mahara Prison for tomorrow and the following day due to damage caused to the prison’s visitor area.

Prison Spokesperson A.C. Gajanayake stated that repair work is currently underway to restore the damaged facility.

Meanwhile, the police curfew imposed on three Grama Niladhari divisions surrounding the Mahara Prison has been lifted.

The curfew had been enforced in the 246 Kandaliyadda Paluwa West, 246/C Kandaliyadda Paluwa North, and 181/G Dambuwa Grama Niladhari divisions following the unrest among inmates at the prison.
