COLOMBO (News 1st) – A group of locals in Mahiyanganaya staged a protest obstructing the 17th milepost area along the Mahiyanganaya – Bibile main road today (March 10).
The protest commenced following an elephant attack early this morning (March 10) that claimed the life of a 54-year-old resident of the area. The deceased, Somadasa is a father of three and had left the residence for work when he met this tragic fate.
The protestors were adamant that the government should support the family at least until the eldest daughter graduates from the university. They also noted that authorities are inconsiderate about their plight and did not take the necessary steps to avoid tragedies of this nature. With the arrival of the police at the scene, the protestors stated that they would not leave until their demands are met.
A group of protestors also invaded the Mapakadawewa wildlife office premises which is half a kilometre from the unfortunate incident. The protest took a violent turn when a woman dashed a wildlife signboard on the ground. It was evident that the officials of the office had vacated the premises following the incident.
Somadasa, a mason had managed to educate his eldest daughter to enter a university had always wished to see his other two young children follow the same path.
It is possible that this won’t be the last tragedy of this nature.
