COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Department of Railways has taken steps to allocate women-only compartments in office trains starting from today, in line with the International Women's Day. The Superintendent of Railways, Dilantha Fernando said these compartments were inaugurated by Minister of Transport, Arjuna Ranatunga and State Minister Ashok Abeysinghe at the Veyangoda and Kurunegala railway stations. Under the 1st phase of this initiative, compartments allocated for women only will be available in seven office trains. He noted that the Sagarika, Samudradevi, and office trains running up to Mahawa, Polgahawela, Rambukkana, Bangadeniya, and Meerigama will include these compartments.
