14 Catholic Bishops signs a release against death penalty

Colombo (News 1st): The members of the Catholic Bishops Conference in Sri Lanka issued a statement to express their stance on the implementation of the death penalty. The statement said "Consequent to the church's teachings in light of the teachings in light of the Gospel, that the death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and the dignity of a person and the church works with determination for its abolition worldwide." Further, the Catholic Bishop's Conference called on civil society groups, the judiciary, legislative and the executive to take preventive measures and design effective rehabilitation of victims with a supportive social system. The document was signed by 14 Bishops including Archbishop of Colombo His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith.
