CID to investigate former DIG Nalaka de Silva’s and Amal Perera’s connection

Colombo (News1st): The Criminal Investigations Department informed court today (Feb 13) that it will probe former DIG Nalaka de Silva’s relationship with musician Amal Perera.

The CID further informed the court that it expects to obtain statements from both Amal Perera and Makandure Madush. They added that they would seek help from Interpol.

They revealed that musician Amal Perera met with former DIG Nalaka Silva on July 21st, 2016. When Amal Perera arrived at the former DIG’s office, a police constable had asked him the reason for his visit. The former DIG had acted irately. He ordered the police constable to be subject to a disciplinary inquiry. The constable was later transferred to the Mount Lavinia police.

These revelations were made during a hearing in connection with the plot to assassinate the President and the former defence secretary. Former DIG Nalaka Silva and Indian national Mercili Thomas are under arrest over the alleged assassination plot. They were remanded further till the 27th of this month.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake ordered the police to provide facts on the investigations on the arrested Indian National at the next court hearing. The Police Special Task Force inspected a house belonging to a relative of Makandure Madush’s mistress. The house is located in the Sapugaskanda area.

Police Media spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara said that a van said to belong to the aunt of the mistress, and a Prado SUV said to belong to the uncle were seized.

A 37-year-old suspect by the name of Mohammed Niyaz Mohammed Azwar was arrested today. This person is said to be an accomplice of Kanchipani Imran, a suspect, arrested in Dubai along with Makandure Madush. He was in charge of a building in Maligawatta. It is suspected that the building was purchased using funds from the sale of narcotics.
