Delaying elections infringes people's rights - Mahinda Deshapriya

Colombo (News 1st) - Chairman of the Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya stated that Case number SCFR 35 2016 which was examined at the Supreme Court is a case filed against the delaying of provincial councils elections. He stated that the courts have declared that the delaying of an election is a considered a breach of Fundamental Rights of the people. He noted that they are currently holding discussions to assess how the Elections Commission can contribute to resolving this issue. Further explaining he stated that 3 elections should be held within the next 2 years; Provincial Council elections, Presidential Election and the General Election.  He also stated that elections for the Southern Province, Galle district and Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha election should also be held. Mahinda Deshapriya noted that to hold a national election it will cost around Rs. 4.5 to 5 billion while a public referendum will cost ranging from Rs. 3.5 to 4 billion.
