Have the UNPers and the UNP backbenchers been deceived?

Colombo (News1st) - Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's recent remarks on the UNP's future and party leadership has speaked a great deal of debate. UPFA MP Chandima Weerakkody recalled the 'motion of no confidence' against the Prime Minister earlier this year and said that today, Ranil Wickremesinghe is not even willing to give up the party leadership, let alone the position of Prime Minister. "I think he is 70 years old now. What we see is that there won't be any victories for the United National Party in future elections. We can imagine what is going to happen to the UNP when the UNPers leave the party.", said Chandima Weerakkody. However, UNP MP Thushara Induni stated that the party's "experienced leaders" will make the decision to resign and hand over the party to the youth, when they decide that it should be done. MP Indunil stated that the party is "getting younger day by day". When questioned about the UNP's 30 election defeats, the MP stated that the UNP has won elections just like it has lost them.

A blast from the past

Following the Motion of No Confidence earlier this year, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe stated on the 23rd of February, 2018 that he has handed over certain responsibilities to a group of ministers to "take the party forward" and he also spoke about plans to "create a new leadership" in the party. The PM said back then that he is hoping to get everything done within a month. The Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe deceived the UNPers and the UNP backbenchers following the No Confidence Motion victory. Now he says that the party leadership may change after 2030.
