COLOMBO (News 1st) – Minister of Higher Education and Cultural Affairs (Dr.) Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe speaking at the Killinochchi University today (August 04) commented on upgrading higher education in Sri Lanka.
According to Minister Wijeydasa Rajapakshe over 33,600 students stand to receive hostel facilities by the end of this year, when the Government declares open all the new hostel buildings. The Minister noted that over the past 70 years, the total accommodations created for university students could only house 56,000 students.
He noted that the entire university student population in Sri Lanka is 91,000 which means that more than 95% of the university students will get hostel accommodations this year (2018).
Minister Rajapkshe said that they are also bound to upgrade the standards of the university degrees, adding that there has been a lot of debate on the matter mainly due to the issues surrounding SAITM.
