COLOMBO (News 1st) – The former Divisional Secretary of Akurana who had been accused of bribery was sentenced to five years in prison by High Court Judge Gihan Kulathunga today. (July 19)
The verdict was issued in connection to an accusation that the Divisional Secretary requested a bribe of 50,000 from an owner of a quarry in order to obtain explosives required and also accepting the sum of money.
In addition to the imprisonment, the accused was ifined Rs. 10,000 and was also ordered to pay back the sum of 50,000 obtained as a bribe to the court.
The complaint had stated that the former Divisional Secretary of Akurana had obtained such a bribe on the 12th of May 2012 when in office.
