COLOMBO (News 1st) - Views were expressed in Parliament on Wednesday (July 04) over the statement made by State Minister Vijayakala Maheswaran recently.
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya announced in Parliament that he took steps to inquire into the statement which was made by State Minister Vijayakala Maheswaran, as soon as he was informed about it. He further noted that he has taken steps to obtain the recordings of the statement and analyze the translations. The Speker went onto to note that he had sought advice from the Attorney General as well.
Furthermore, the Speaker noted that while such steps were being taken, two MPs acted in an unruly manner bringing disrepute to the good name of Parliament.
Delivering a statement to Parliament, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe noted that they would always protect the unity of this country. He stated that this was both the Government's and UNP's policy. He went onto to state the LTTE has been banned and that there is no need to recreate such a banned organization.
The Prime Minister went on to state that he convened the party's political committee yesterday after hearing about the statement. He noted that appropriate action would be taken against her once she comes to Colombo and faces an inquiry.
Wickremesinghe explained that the individuals who created a ruckus in Parliament yesterday were the same people who appointed Karuna, a man responsible for the deaths of 600 police officers, a deputy chairman of their party and the same people who gave money to Prabakaran to win an election.
The Prime Minister what right the said individuals have to speak in this manner when they were ones responsible for throwing the Army Commander who won the war into prison on trumped-up charges. The Prime Minister also stated that yesterdays incidents were caused in order to undercut the importance of the charges brought forward by New York Times.
