Weather Alert : Atmospheric disturbance to cause heavy rains

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Issuing a weather advisory, the Department of Meteorology says due to a low-level atmospheric disturbance in the vicinity of Sri Lanka associated with Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone, cloudy and showery conditions are expected over most parts of the Island. The department further notes that heavy falls, about 100mm can be expected at some places, particularly in Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Uva, Western and North-western provinces and in Ampara and Batticaloa districts. According to the department wind speeds along the Western, Southern and Eastern seas could increase up to 70 or 80 kilometres per hour. The Disaster Management Center says the water levels of the Attangalle Oya are rising from the Dunamale area. Its Assistant Director, Pradeep Kodippilli said residents of the Ja-Ela, Minuwangoda, Gampaha, and Wattala areas must remain vigilant. Meanwhile, six spill gates of the Deduru Oya, five spill gates of the Udawalawa Reservoir and two spill gates of the Kala Wewa have been opened. Assistant Director Kodippilli said residents of low lying areas should be vigilant as a result.
