COLOMBO (News 1st) – Minister of Sports Faiszer Musthapha has instructed the secretary to the ministry to remove the Director General of the Sports Development Department H. M. B. P. Herath from his position with immediate effect.
The decision has been taken due to his failure to provide necessary accommodation facilities to participants and their trainers representing Sri Lanka at the 2018 South Asian Junior Athletics Championship, which is set to begin today (May 5).
Issuing a communique, the ministry said 84 participants and 15 trainers will attend the championship representing Sri Lanka, this year. Accommodation for participants was provided at the Sports Development Department and the dormitory in Torrington.
However, the electricity supply to the dormitory in Torrington was suspended since morning yesterday (May 4), and as a result, the participants were severely inconvenienced.
The communique, further noted that the director general, however, failed to provide any solution to the matter, adding that finally, the minister had to intervene and provide accommodation for the participants at a hotel.
