438 drunk drivers arrested on New Year day

COLOMBO (News 1st) - According to the Police legal action has been initiated against 8,600 persons in connection with a number of motor traffic violations. These offenses include speeding violations, driving without a license and similar offenses. The police noted that 438 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence alcohol during the course of yesterday (April 14).  Superintendent of Police Indika Hapugoda noted that nine fatal motor accidents were reported around the country yesterday, he added that these accidents caused the deaths of 3 police officers as well. He added that 10,147 violations of motor traffic rules were monitored from across the country during the 12th and 13th of this month. 233 drunk drivers were also arrested during this period.
