President calls on multi religious leaders to assist in reinstating peace and harmony

COLOMBO (News 1st) - President Maithripala Sirisena has stressed the importance of the intervention of religious leaders to build unity among all communities and avoid altercations. The President made this remark during the Kurunegala District Development Committee Meeting. According to President Sirisena, the Cabinet of Ministers and the National Security Council convened both yesterday (March 6) and the day before (March 5) and Measures have been taken to put an end to the communal issue. Furthermore, he stated that the Sri Lanka Army, Navy, Air Force, Police and the Special Task Force have been deployed to those areas to ensure life returns to normalcy, maintain the peace and prevent conflicts. At the same time, the President requested the Maha Sangha led by the Mahanayake's and the Islam, Hindu and Christian Leaders to intervene in this matter and implement a program to maintain the peace in those areas. He also stated that it is clear to them that the organized extremist elements are attempting to create an uneasy situation in the country and that the Minister and MP's in the North Western Province and the Police must protect places of worship and work in peace to prevent altercation between the Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim communities who are all brothers.
