A decision has been taken to fumigate all containers carrying agricultural products, including tea, to Russia.

According to the Tea Commissioner, Jayantha Edirisinghe, the particular products will be subjected through a special fumigation process before being loaded. He added that the stocks of tea will then be certified by the Plant Quarantine Unit.

He explained that this decision was made following the recent discovery of an insect in one of the tea consignments sent to Russia.

The team of experts who left for Russia to discuss the ban imposed on Sri Lankan Tea returned to the country yesterday, December 29, with a letter issued by the Russian Plant Quarantine Institute regarding the removal of the ban.

The ban imposed by Russia on Sri Lankan Tea on December 18 will be removed from tomorrow, December 31, onwards.
