Fire on MSC Daniela continues to rage

The fire which erupted on Container ship MSC Daniela continues to rage, says theSri Lanka Navy.

According to Navy, three dora vessels and the ship ‘Sagara‘ of the SL Navy have been dispatched to douse the fire. Additionally, Soor and Dharsha of the Indian Navy have also been dispatched to assist the operation.

Two SLN FACs managed to escort the vessel up to 33 Nm off the Colombo Lighthouse on the evening of  April 04, and the distance was further cut short by escorting it to 10 Nm off Colombo by the morning of April 05. Two tugs of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Rawana and Maha Wewa also joined firefighting efforts but the initial efforts went in vain due to the intensity of flames.

The Incident

SL Navy had received a distress call from a local agent aboard MSC Daniela at around 11 on the morning of April 4,  regarding the fire.

The container carrier had been approximately 120 nautical miles away from Sri Lanka at the time of the call and was later brought up to 30 nautical miles in Sri Lankan waters.

1MSC Daniela, registered under the flag of Panama, is a 14,000-container carrier, one of the most massive container ships in the world and has a crew of 22 working on board the ship.

No injuries have been reported thus far.
