Senior Professor Amal Kumarage of the Transportation Science Division at the University of Moratuwa, says that the loss incurred daily as a result of traffic congestion is over Rs.500 million.
Prof. Amal Kumarage added that the only solution to overcome this loss is to strengthen the public transportation sector of the country.
According to police reports; there is a gradual increase in the number of vehicles that enter Colombo daily.Police statistics reveal that around 450,000 vehicles out of the total of over 500,000, which enter Colombo on a daily basis are private vehicles.
1.9 million people come to Colombo daily via public and private modes of transportation.
DIG of Police for Motor Traffic, Palitha Fernando said that as a result of this, heavy traffic is reported regularly in several areas of Colombo.
