The National Movement for a Just Society criticised the government for not acting on recommendations of a commission appointed to look into the murder of Welikada prison inmates.
Members of the Movement and civil society activists were present for the media briefing.
At the media briefing, a Convener of the National Movement for a Just Society Prof. Sarath Wijesuriya said that after the government came into power, a commission was appointed to look into the murder of inmates at the Welikada prison and that this commission completed the task they were given and have submitted a report to the Justice minister. However, the minister has not intervened to implement the recommendations of this report it was stated.
He noted that it would be quite an “unpleasant scenario” if the very government who appointed this commission is failing to implement it’s recommendations.
“There is no difference between Mahinda Rajapaksa’s administration and this administration”, he added.
Another Convener of the National Movement for a Just Society Saman Ratnapriya also spoke saying, quite and unpleasant incident took place inside the premises of the prison on November 9, 2012, which was the day 27 inmates were killed. And that these inmates were killed under the guise of a STF and Army inspection allegedly under the directive of Defence Secretary Gotabaya and four committees were appointed after the inmates were murdered.
“The good governance government and the Minister of Justice have a responsibility to implement the recommendations of this report. Look at the report and see who has committed this crime”, he added.
The leader of the National Unity Alliance Azad Sally said, after the death of the inmates, four commissions were appointed, which are of no use.
He went on to note that the current government is protecting the Rajapaksas.
“So, it is time that the president and the prime minister fulfill the promises that were given to the people. We kindly urge that they be fulfilled”, he added.
