Despite some of those recent tragedies, air travel is still one of the safest forms of transportation around.

Well, according to AirlineRatings.com (Australian consumer aviation website) 2016 has been recorded as the second safest year in the history of commercial aviation, after 2013.

Qantas has been named the world’s safest airline for the fourth year running due to its fatality-free record.

Making up to the top 20 in alphabetical order are;

Air New Zealand
Alaska Airlines
All Nippon Airways
British Airways
Cathay Pacific Airways
Delta Air Lines
Etihad Airways
EVA Air
Finnair
Hawaiian Airlines
Japan Airlines
KLM, Lufthansa
Scandinavian Airline System
Singapore Airlines
Swiss
United Airlines
Virgin Atlantic
Virgin Australia

The aforementioned 20 airlines were selected from 425 carriers around the world.

The carriers hail from Asia, North America, Australia, and Europe, with no carriers from Africa and South America making the cut.

Responding to public interest, AirlineRatings.com also identified its top ten safest low-cost airlines.
