Embilipitiya elephant encounter claims a life

Two wild elephants ran amok in  the Liyangahawela area in Embilipitiya on the afternoon of Friday September 30, creating a tense situation in the surrounding areas.

A number of locals suffered injuries after being attacked by the two wild elephants. One of them succumbed to his injuries upon admission to hospital.

According to the residents, the elephants would have been making their way from Sooriyawewa to Moraketiya when they came across Embilipitiya.

A joint operation by police and officials of the Wildlife Department is underway to drive the two elephants back into the forest.

Located just three kilometres from the location of the incident, is the Embilipitiya city centre.
