President calls for an end to child labour at Colombo event

President calls for an end to child labour at Colombo event

An event to mark World Day Against Child Labour was held under the auspices of President Maithripala Sirisena today.The theme this year is End child labour in supply chains – It’s everyone’s business.

World Day Against Child Labour is marked on June 12.. An event to mark the day was held at the BMICH on Wednesday morning.A large gathering including students, minister and diplomats were present at the event.

“We need to strengthen the existing laws for the protection of our children”, charged the President who further pointed out that if there any shortcomings in these laws, new laws must be formulated that they need to be enacted in a proper manner. However, this cannot be solely undertaken by the law because society also has a responsibility to protect children, pointed out the president.

The president  further stated:

The the best punishment would be to expose these persons rather than throwing them in jail or lashing them. And that is the responsibility of the media and to bring them before society and expose these persons and let everyone know who they are.

Meanwhile. the pledge to declare Sri Lanka as a country free of child labour was presented to the president by  International Labour Organisation Country Director for Sri Lanka and the Maldives Donglin Li , after which it was signed.

Thereafter, the president sent out an SMS to all Sri Lankans, calling for an end to child labour.
