The religious ceremony to bestow the Mahaweli Maha Seya to the Budda Sasana will be held on Monday, June 20, under the auspices of President Maithripala Sirisena.
The Mahaweli project centered around the Kotmale Reservoir commenced four decades ago, in a bid to build a prosperous nation.The then government had to appropriate many lands and temples for this purpose.
The then minister of land, land development and Mahaweli development, the late Gamini Dissanayake commenced the building of the Mahaweli Maha Seya, in appreciation of the sacrifice made by the people for the Mahaweli project.The architectural plans for the stupa was done by Vidyajothi, Dr A. N. S. Kulasinghe.
The country’s first executive president the Late J. R. Jayewardene laid the foundation stone for the Mahaweli Seya in 1983.
From Monday, devotees can visit the Kotmale Maha seeya, which is second in size only to the Ruwanweli Maha Seya,
The bestowing of the Mahaweli Maha Seya to the Budda Sasana will take place today at the auspicious time of 2.00 p.m, under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
