Heavy rains experienced in a number of areas have disrupted normal life. Landslide warnings were issued to the Balangoda and Imbulpe Divisional Secretariats in the Ratnapura District. Twenty five (25) fmilies living in the Pettigala Estate in Balangoda were evacuated due to a landslide threat.

NBRO Landslide Research and Risk Management Division Head, R.M.S Bandara stated that a landslide warning was issued from 5.30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10, for a period of 24 hours, to the Balangoda and Imbulpe Divisional Secretariats in the Ratnapura District owing to incessant rains.

The Divisional Secretary of the Balangoda Pradeshiya Sabha noted that steps were taken on Tuesday afternoon to relocate the 25 families to safer grounds owing to the risk of landslides.

One person died after being struck by lightning experienced in the Miyathakolanne area in Eheliyagoda. According to the police, he was struck by lightning while at his residence.

The deceased, aged 26, has been identified as S.G. Swarnapala. The victim died following admission to the Eheliyagoda Divisional hospital.

Meanwhile, thirty houses were damaged owing to strong winds which gushed through Paduwasnuwara east, Kuliyapitiya east and Bamunakotuwa areas. Residents point out that several roads were inundated owning to incessant rains and uprooted trees in the Katupotha Udugampola, and Morahena areas.

Twenty six houses and farmlands were damaged owning to incessant rains experienced in the Puttalam area. Several areas too were inundated owing to uprooted trees, resulting in the disruption of  electricity supply.

Four houses were damaged in the Baddegama, Agaliya and Akurutiya ‍areas owning to strong winds. Residents say that banana, tea, and rubber crops were damaged owning to incessant rains.

Several houses in the Embilipitiya area were also damaged owning to strong winds, which also resulted in damage to electricity and phone lines. Two buildings in the Embilitpitya Ayurveda Hospital were damaged owing to falling trees.

Fifteen houses were also damaged owning to strong winds that swept through the Hingurakgoda, Pansalgodella area in Ratnapura. The supply of electricity to the area too was disrupted owing to strong winds experienced in the area.
